Penalty Imposed on Blackwood Pub for Inadequate Allergen Information

The Rock Pub and Bed and Breakfast in Blackwood, Gwent, faced legal action after failing to furnish essential allergen details. This prosecution came about as a result of an inquiry conducted by the Trading Standards Service of Caerphilly Council.

An incident at the pub in August 2022 raised concerns, as Paul Taylor, the owner of the Rock Pub, failed to furnish vital allergen information to a patron with a severe food allergy. Trading Standards became aware of this issue.

According to reports, Trading Standards Officers conducted an initial business inspection, offering Paul advice and a formal warning. On the 28th November 2022, trading standards officers revisited to make a test purchase and requested dairy allergen information. However, Paul did not provide the required information and instead directed officers to a menu disclaimer stating, 'We are unable to cater for customers with food allergies.

Paul entered a written guilty plea to Cwmbran Magistrates Court and was fined £293 and ordered to pay the Council’s costs of £1,879.70 and victim surcharge of £117.
